Replies to Family Member Letter about RagesPerson with Borderline Personality DisorderDeal with the rage of a borderline personality disorder or any person in the world the same way. Recognize and validate the person's feelings in as calm and empathetic and respectful a manner as possible. If the rage is overwhelmingly inappropriate, hurtful or violent, tell them so. Having a mental illness doesn't give anyone the right to behave cruelly or abusively toward another person. If the situation cannot be managed or continues to be a serious problem then separate yourself -- leave, just say "no". Don't sacrifice your happiness just to appease someone else. Those of us with BPD etc., don't have some kind of "built-in" excuse to stomp all over the rest of the world just because we're sick. You deal with inappropriate behavior from anyone all in the same fashion, no exceptions! Permission by Anonymous
